GET IT RIGHT

unleashing happiness FRONT 4.0.jpg

Deciding to bring a dog into your life is a lot like getting married. It's a big decision,  it comes with huge responsibilities and obligations, and it should last a lifetime.

You want to get it right.

Rule #1 in choosing a puppy is that all puppies are cute. So don't commit to the first cute face you see. In fact, maybe the right dog for you isn't a puppy at all. Maybe getting a dog that has outgrown chewing on slippers and having accidents is for you. Do you know just how much a German Shepherd sheds? Or how much it will cost to groom Poodle? If you have never trained a dog before, do you really want to start with a stubborn breed?

By learning in advance what to look for, which breed and what temperament best suits you and your lifestyle, and what it actually takes to care for a dog, you will increase the chances that your choice will be a good one and will indeed last a lifetime.

How to Pick a Puppy 2nd Edition (2023) -

BEFORE YOU RESCUE, ADOPT, OR BUY,  READ THIS BOOK!

There are an estimated 90 million (!) pet dogs in the United States; almost 40% of US households include at least one dog. Yet, more than three million dogs enter the shelter system annually and almost one-third of those are euthanized.

Each year, too many dogs get rehomed, relinquished, or returned; not because they are bad dogs, and not even because the people involved are bad—but because bad choices were made. When a dog is ill-matched to its family—either because little forethought is given, or decisions are based on inaccurate information as to what it takes to raise a dog forever—it is the dog that is blamed. It is the dog that is given away or even abandoned.

Certainly, each of those families intended to care for their dog forever. So what went wrong? Obviously there is a problem with how we are approach bringing dogs into our lives.

Deciding to get a dog should be steeped in honest assessment, knowledge, and planning. Caring for a dog requires the same. There is a lot to know and a lot to consider. Let "How to Pick a Puppy" be your guide for choosing and then caring for the right dog for you.

Domesticated canines have helped herd and tend livestock for millennia.   Depending on which livestock and which environment the dogs would work in, over the centuries, different breeds were developed and bred to. To move a hundred head of cattle from field to field or to an urban market is not the same as rounding up  pairs or individual sheep from across hundreds of acres of hills and cliffs. Different jobs require different functions and we know that in dogs, form follows function.

Today there are more than 200 different breeds of herding, tending, guardian, pastoral dogs. But for all their differences, their core similarities remain the same. They are exceptionally loyal, well-suited for multiple tasks and can multitask at the same time, under proper training they are incredibly biddable (trainable), and are phenomenally smart.

Come learn about the various herding breeds from around the world and how they best serve us and live their best lives by doing what they were bred to do.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING

I have known Laura Vinogradov for over 15 years and have always been impressed with her knowledge of the dog world. She's also been a good listener, always learning. Laura is an amazing researcher; I've never known her to share information that's not been investigated or that she herself has tested. I have spent many hours going over different dog related subjects with her. She always has so much to offer.

 CAROL SELZLE PETRUZZO

Award-winning dog show handler and breeder of more than 50 AKC Champion Doberman Pinchers. recipient of the prestigious Doberman Pincher Breeder of the year, APEX, and Legacy awards.

When I hear the name Laura Vinogradov, I think of an angel, as she was indeed our dog's angel. A few years ago Laura cared for our Murphy for almost 4 months, caring for him as if he were HER dog!

I know no one else with her breadth of knowledge about ALL facets of dog care and would never leave Murphy with anyone but Laura!

If you have an opportunity to share in her knowledge - take it!

It was honestly one of the best “manuals” I’ve ever read. Far too many are very dry and dull. Others are so technical that novice readers get frustrated. And then there are those that are supposedly geared toward newbies but are written with so much condescension it’s insulting. But this "how-to" is informative and friendly, thorough but not overwhelming, and obviously based on experience. A must read for all dog owners, future and present!
